The Tide is In! ARTCi Launches "Tide Water Tales" at Britannia Shipyards National Heritage

What is our connection to the Fraser River? How have Indigenous, Japanese, Chinese, and European cultures overlapped on its local banks to fish, and build community and industries? What are their little-known stories and what legacies have they left on its muddy shores?
Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site’s first Artist-In-Residency program in partnership with Public Art and Engaging Artists in Communities Program is featuring Artists Rendering Tales Collective Inc. (ARTCi) who are exploring multi-ethnic cultural stories through the theme of "Tide Water Tales."
The ARTCi team features professional artists with backgrounds in digital media, visual art, Indigenous arts, dramatic arts and creative writing whose specialty is in researching, capturing and depicting stories, past, present, and future. Artists Rendering Tales Collective Inc. (ARTCi) engages the public in performance, the visual and digital depiction of the little known yet intriguing characters that made history through their day-to-day interactions in Steveston.
In 2018, ARTCi is working with their partners to engage visitors in events at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. Volunteers and the public have opportunities to become involved by attending drama workshops and portraying historical characters at public events, contribute towards making a history scroll, and discover their rich connections to the legacy of the Shipyards. The activities are family-friendly and free.

Volunteer Drama Workshop, 9:00am-12:00pm

Listen, learn and participate in drama workshops hosted by ARTCi that will bring to life the people who lived and worked at Britannia Shipyards. Become part of a professional team who will enact historical characters and engage visitors in performances.
Art of Story Telling, 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Location: Chinese Bunkhouse, Murakami House, Britannia Shipyards Dock
Visit Britannia Shipyards and participate in this roving book reading. Authors will read excerpts from their historical fiction books at a variety of Britannia's picturesque locations, followed by a panel discussion on the delicate line between historical fiction and reality. ARTCi will engage panelists and visitors with a found poetry activity.
ARTCi Art Workshop – 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Location: Seine Net Loft
An ARTCi visual artist will engage visitors in connecting their personal stories to those of Britannia in a “Make Your Mark” art activity. By encouraging them to add to a scroll, which will be on display at the completion of the artist residency.
